Cyclocross Barriers Recipe
Making your own portable cyclocross barriers is really easy. I just built my first pair in about half an hour for a total cost of less then $30. Here’s what I did.
Ingredients for one barrier:
1 x 10’ length of 3/4” PVC pipe
2 x 90 degree elbow joints for 3/4” pipe (unthreaded)
3 x T-junctions for 3/4” pipe (unthreaded)
a saw, a marker, and a measuring tape

Yup. Classic Gavia action.
Moser on a reverse-pennyfarthing/funny-tt bike hybrid. Bet it handles like a dream in crosswinds.
Creepy? More than a little. Hinault appears to enjoy cradling that animal’s backside amidst the bric-a-brac cluttering up the World’s only cycling-themed wax museum.
Seems like post-ride rituals were a bit different 20 years ago…..

7 Days of Cypress - Day 6 and 7 Ride Report
Solid weekend. 288kms ridden, 16,000 ft of climbing.
Yesterday saw most 7DOC contenders manage only one ride up the mountain after a tough ride to Squamish on the Garneau Charity Ride. With 130kms in the can prior to starting the climb, no amount of caffeinated gels could trigger the good sensations in the legs. We plodded our way up, posed for a photo and slow-rolled back into the city for some...
7 Days of Cypress - Day 5 Ride Report
Slow.
Everyone was pretty cooked today, but BG managed to nut up in a big way and take the overall lead with 8 climbs in 5 days. Not only did he make today a double, but he pulled a split shift and did one before work and one after. Spreading the climbs out does give the guns a few hours to cool, but as most Vancouver riders know, half the battle of Cypress is getting there. Even if you are...
7 Days of Cypress - Day 4 Ride Report
Today was a tough one.
Only single climbs were put in by all 7DOC competitors out on the Garneau Ride from La Bicicletta, but there general consensus when we got back to the bottom was that one was enough. Bad bugs and a blistering pace set by the Garneau ride leaders put almost everyone well into the red by the first switchback.
Some notable highlights from the day’s action:
-BG is...
7 Days of Cypress - Day 3 Ride Report
Some solid climbing up on the bug infested mountain today.
David Broemeling got an early start on the day and managed to post one on the scoreboard before heading to work. Well done and a nice photo from the top!
Once I was released from my cubicle I raced over to meet up with Brooks and do a nice tempo ascent. We did a pretty easy one and then met up with this morning’s leader BG and...
7 Days of Cypress - Day 2 Ride Report
A quiet day in the mountains today. BG managed to squash one in before work (well done), but it appears that most contenders chose to race the WTNC tonight instead. Hats off to EVr member Caribbean Chad aka Criterium Chad who has been mixing it up nicely in the Cat 3s and scored another top 5 finish this evening.
Current 7DOC Standings:
1. Bryan “The Reluctant Cat 2” Gallant: 4...
7 Days of Cypress - Day 1 Ride Report
It’s August 1st. 7 Days of Cypress (7DOC) has begun!
BG and I (RW) got a good start on the proceedings this morning, climbing Cypress 3 times in the sweltering 15-20 degree temperatures. I managed to hang on to BG’s wheel until the final climb, blowing up in spectacular fashion on the last stretch as BG danced away on the pedals like the reluctant Cat 2 racer he is.
FYI, for those...
